Mission
Water & Power is a community space and artist collective that provides exhibition experience for youth and older artists who haven’t had the opportunity to present work publicly. Founded due to the lack of institutional and familial support for our underserved South LA queer, youth and elder community, we facilitate community gatherings through organizing exhibitions, performances, live music and peer led workshops.
By bringing community together through the arts, and creating career and educational opportunities for our peers that aren’t being offered by major institutions, we combat the crises of stratified community through creating moments of connection, celebration, and joy.
Programs and Services
Water & Power presents exhibitions, multi-media performances, and live music events that give emerging artists and teams their first or next opportunity to show work publicly. Our artist residency program provides dedicated time and space for artists to develop new community-facing presentations at no cost to them, including documentation support for portfolio development and visibility.
Our programming centers peer-led learning, grassroots artist education, and hands-on skill-building. By placing working artists at the center of our educational model, we generate real career and educational opportunities for our peers.
Artist Collective
As an artist-led queer collective, we work to create accessible performance opportunities for underrepresented and emerging artists, with a focus on those who have aged out of traditional institutional resources or never had access to them to begin with.
We give residencies to emerging, low-income, and system-impacted artists facing intersectional barriers to presenting work. Our educational programming focuses on peer-led learning from working artists, grassroots artist education, and hands-on workshops.
