~Beyond binaries
of on and off, light takes shape
Walls and eyes refract~
In this workshop, participants are invited into the world of lamps, to work with light as a material.
Over two sessions, you will learn the fundamentals of lamp design and basic electrical assembly, then develop your own piece using wire and mixed media. Expect a balance of structure and freedom: technical guidance alongside space to explore, improvise, and follow unexpected directions.
Session 1: Light, Form, Possibilities
An introduction to lamp typologies (pendant, sconce, table, floor) and a brief history of lighting design.
We’ll look at examples and discuss:
– Light as material (direction, shadow, color, diffusion)
– Placement + spatial considerations
– Bulbs, cords, and hardware basics
– Sketching and translating ideas into form
– Beginning your wire armature: shaping, wrapping, and structural techniques
Session 2: Making
Continued hands-on fabrication of a pendant or small lamp:
– Surface building with fabric, paper, mesh, and found materials
– Decoupage and binding methods
– Installing sockets + accessing wiring
– Suspension + installation strategies
All experience levels are welcome!
Tools and Materials Provided
We will provide materials to make a decoupage pendant, including a bulb base, armature wire, sockets, switches, acrylic medium, and textiles with varied textures and transparencies. Extra cloth covered cord will be available for purchase by the foot at the workshop.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own materials and ideas. Lamps can be made from a wide range of materials depending on your interests and skillset, and we’ll work with you to bring your idea into form. More advanced approaches involving LED systems, sensors, or Arduino-based electronic elements can also be supported within the workshop.
